Three days after a man was killed and his woman friend was brutally injured after being attacked with a sharp weapon allegedly during a theft attempt at an isolated spot in the Adalaj area of Gandhinagar, the accused has been arrested in connection with the Saturday stabbing case, said the officials from Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) of Ahmedabad City Police on Tuesday.
The police had identified the deceased as 25-year-old Vaibhav Manvani.
According to the DCB, the accused Vipul alias Vimal alias Neel Parmar was apprehended from Kagdadi village in Rajkot’s Tankara taluka.
Parmar is an accused in several loot cases and has at least one murder, an attempt to murder case registered against him, said the police.
Inspector MS Gohel of the Crime Branch, said, “We used human intelligence and traditional investigation methods to nab him. We had confidential information about his identity and possible location. We raided a premises in Kagdadi village and found him there. He was handed over to Adalaj police for further legal action.”
She added, “His modus operandi is to loot people but he attacks his victims when they try to fight back. He was released from Sabarmati Central Jail just a year ago.”
Case History
According to police, Manvani suffered 12 stab wounds, including to his head, neck and torso. The woman sustained four stab wounds, including to her neck and stomach and is recuperating at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. According to doctors, her condition is stable after undergoing surgery.
Police Inspector LD Odedara of Adalaj police station had earlier told the Indian Express, “Manvani and his friends were out celebrating his birthday on Friday (September 19) night. At 12:15 am on Saturday (September 20), they dropped a female friend near Tapovan circle. Later, Manvani and his friend stopped the car next to the Narmada Canal. At 1:15 am, the accused approached them and tried to loot them. They tried to defend, but the accused stabbed them with a sharp weapon.”
While Manvani died on the spot, the woman ran off from the place along Tapovan-Koba road and sat down by the roadside. About 15 minutes later, she borrowed the phone from a passerby and informed her father, who, in turn, called an ambulance and shifted her to hospital. Meanwhile, the police reached the spot.
The 24-year-old woman, who doctors at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital said was in a stable condition, had to undergo surgery for four stab wounds she sustained during the attack, including to her neck and stomach.
While the incident took place in the jurisdiction of Gandhinagar Police, officials from the Crime Branch of Ahmedabad City Police as well as the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), had joined the investigation.
