This time,Praveshotsav to focus on school dropouts

To ensure 100 per cent registration of children in entry-level class in government primary schools, the annual enrolment drive — Praveshotsav — conducted in Gujarat, will also focus on dropouts this year. As per the changes incorporated in the drive, dropout rate after Class V,considered to be one of the major grey areas by the state Education Department, will be addressed.

The reason attributed to this recommendation is the rate of dropout of five (i.e five in 100 students) between Class VI-VIII as against nearly two for Class V and below. The Praveshotsav scheduled from June 13-15 and June 20-22 in rural and urban areas, respectively, with more than 3,000 Class I and Class II officers being deputed on the three-day drive across the state, will also include education of children with special needs (CWSN),this time.

“Dropout of students after Class V is the major concern, especially among girls. As in many cases, the students are required to either change the school or even commute from the native village to another village or town for further education, the parents opt to discontinue the education. Thus, these changes have been recommended in the Praveshotsav,” said the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan officiating director Manoj Aggarwal.

As per department’s information, there are nearly 2,600 government primary schools till Class V,where the students have to change the school as well as the respective village to get enrolled in Class VI. Further, there are around 8,000 primary schools where the students are not required to change the native village but the existing school.

Aggarwal further added that to ensure no dropout among these thousands of students, the teachers from old schools will be directed to get students admitted to next class in the available government school either in same village or nearest village.

For the enrolment drive in Class I,a survey was conducted last month by primary teachers for children admissible to school. As the drive will be conducted in June, after the first phase of admissions is done,it will also help in assessing parents’ preference for either government or private schools.
