After two days of negligence shown towards the remains of the temple, which were found at the SSG Hospital on Monday, the medical superintendent finally wrote to the Archaeology Survey of India (ASI) on Thursday to take over the excavation work. Dr Atul Saxena, medical superintendent,SSG Hospital, said,We have written to the ASI for conducting further excavation. The construction workers at the hospital premises had unearthed the temple remains during the construction of a new facility. They informed the authorities about it,but no action was taken by the hospital management. The next day, rains washed away the soil which covered the carvings on the structure. It was only then that the authorities realised it was a fragment of an ancient temple. The experts are also of the view that there is a need for further excavation to find out what lies beneath. We dont know what is inside. May be we will find the entire temple structure, said Dr Ambika Patel of the Department of Archaeology,M S University. She added that the fragments unearthed were of 12th or 13th century Solanki temple. This is for the second time that an ancient structure has been found in the hospital premises. Earlier, some ancient coins and articles were found during the excavation at the place. Superintendent of ASI Vadodara region Shivanand said,I am not holding the charge anymore, therefore I will not be able to comment on it. Till yesterday,I didnt receive any letter from the hospital. The new officer in charge could not be contacted.
