With the Congress, AAP and the BJP declaring its candidates, the byelections to ward No. 20 of the Surat Municipal Corporation is all set to witness a triangular fight on August 6. The election has been necessitated after the death of BJP Councillor Jayesh Jariwala last year in May 2022.
AAP candidate Mukesh Pasiyawala filed his nomination Thursday, while Congress candidate Shailesh Rayka filed his a day later. The BJP announced its candidate Rajesh Rana Friday. He will file his nomination Saturday.
The last date of filing the nomination for the bypoll to the seat comprising the Khatodara, Majura and Sagrampura areas is July 23.
Party sources said Rajesh is currently the organisation secretary from ward No. 19. Rana will file his nomination Saturday with the election department office. Ward No. 20 has four BJP councillors, including two females.
Surat City BJP president Niranjan Janjmera said, “This ward falls in the three assembly constituencies of Surat North, Majura and Limbayat. We are confident we will maintain our victory streak.” Meanwhile, Surat City Congress president Hasmukh Desai accused the BJP of political vendetta in the arrest of its leader Aslam Cyclewala. He was booked under extortion as his name was used to get mediclaim money from an insurance company.
“Our party candidate Shailesh Rayka has a good image and people know him personally. The BJP feared losing this seat to our leader Aslam Cyclewala due to his popularity. Hence, they got him arrested under PASA at Sabarmati Jail on Thursday. The purpose is that Cyclewala should not campaign for Shailesh Rayka,” Desai said.
