The Surat Central Jail on Saturday released 11 prisoners, including one woman, who have completed 14 years in jail after they were convicted by courts.
A couple of months ago, at a meeting of the Jail Salahkar Committee headed by Surat Collector Dr Sourabh Pardhi, a decision was taken to release these prisoners. When they were released, the 11 were given flowers and a copy of Bhagavad Gita.
Those released are Chhanabhai Rohit (46), Manoj Warli (53), Gaman Gamit (53), Nitaben Tushar Bhatt (43), Ramesh alias Gotlo Ambalal Parmar (50), Babubhai Muljibhai Bhil (66), Subhashbhai Champakbhai Patel (58), Dipakkumar Bamaniya (41), Dahyabhai Bhupatbhai Pamrar (51), Ranjeet alias Rango Vakhatsinh Parmar (46) and Jayeshbhai Lallubhai Sharma (48).
While Chhanabhai Rohit had spent 26 years in jail, Ramesh alias Gotalo Ambalal Parmar had been in jail for over 21 years. Babubhai Bhil and Subhash Patel had spent 14 years each behind bars.
Jail Superintendent J M Desai said, “The Jail Salahkar Committee had submitted a list 11 of convicted prisoners to the state home department for approval. Before such prisoners are selected for release, their conduct with jail staffers and other prisoners is taken into consideration. It is also looked into if during furlough or parole, they had committed any crime.”
