A 45-year-old labourer was killed and three others were severely injured when a tower crane allegedly collapsed on them while working at a steel plant in Surat city’s Hazira industrial area on Monday, said police.
The incident took place at a construction site inside the ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India’s (AM/NS India’s) steel production facility, said the police.
The police identified the deceased as Vinod Paswan and the injured as Mohmmed Shehzad (35), Sonu (30) and Majharul Islam (30), all natives of Bihar.
The condition of the injured labourers is reported to be stable, said the police while quoting the doctors attending them.
According to the press release from AM/NS, on Monday, the construction work was in progress at the site and was being operated by contractor ITD Cementation India Limited.
A tower crane, which a contractor’s employee was operating, allegedly collapsed, leading to the death of one of the labourers on the spot and injury to three others, said the police. Soon after the incident, the AM/NS security staff rushed all three workers to the company’s hospital premises, from where they were referred to a private hospital in Surat city, said the police. Later, Hazira police officials reached the spot and started a probe into the matter. The officials of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the Director of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH) have also launched an investigation into the matter.
Hazira Police Inspector V L Parmar said, “A worker died and three others have been injured during the incident. Later in the day, two labourers were discharged after primary treatment even as Mohammed Shehzad is still undergoing treatment at the private hospital”.
“As of now, we have registered a case of accidental death and are waiting for the reports of DISH and FSL to carry out further investigations into the matter,” said Parmar.
