Those who have fled Vadodara after pelting stones at Ram Navami processions last week to escape police action will be traced and brought to book, said Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi Tuesday, calling it a “grave issue”.

Stating that Gujarat is a state that has “never differentiated between festivals”, Sanghavi who was in Vadodara to promote the upcoming Saurashtra Tamil Sangamam event, said, “Gujarat is the number one state in the country because we (people) have worked hard for it… Be it Eid or Diwali, we have never differentiated between festivals. It is a grave issue that there has been stone pelting during the Ram Navami procession… We are taking this matter very seriously; CCTV footage is being examined to nab the rioters…”

“Those who fled the city to escape police action… we will find each of them and initiate strict legal action… If anyone is found spreading rumours to break the peace in the city, they will be severely dealt with. Police are prepared for it,” added Sanghavi. He also held a series of meetings with the Vadodara police and administration.

Adding that the security agencies have a “hawk eye” on those delivering hate speeches, the minister said, “The central agencies and ministries are in constant touch with the state departments over matters of law and order. There is no tolerance for hate speech… Anyone who delivers hate speeches will be tracked down from any corner and be severely dealt with.”

Fielding a question about conman Kiran Patel’s closeness with BJP leaders, Sanghavi said, “The opposition is making noise about the issue but they should be smarter… The conman has been arrested by the BJP government…”

Sanghavi also announced the state government’s initiative to bring Gujaratis from Saurashtra settled in Tamil Nadu to their hometowns. The event, titled Saurashtra Tamil Sangamam, is aimed at “bridging the gap” between Saurashtra in Gujarat and the original inhabitants, who migrated to Tamil Nadu years ago in what would be the “biggest exodus” of a community.

Sanghavi said, “The migration of Gujaratis from Saurashtra to Tamil Nadu during invasions from the likes of Mohammad Gazni and Alauddin Khilji was among the biggest exodus of the world… It will be a historic moment when the Saurashtrian Tamilians will be given a warm homecoming between April 17 and 30.”
