State board panel recommends semester system for Class XI,XII

Semester system in higher secondary education – Class XI and XII – could be a reality from the next academic year in the state.

Semester system in higher secondary education – Class XI and XII – could be a reality from the next academic year in the state. This comes after the final meeting of the 14-member committee of the Gujarat Secondary Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB). The panel submitted its report to the state government for approval on Friday.

According to the recommendations, the exams will be conducted in four semesters in a year, with the first three semester exams being objective in nature while the fourth one will be subjective.

No decision was taken to introduce grade system for SSC or even scraping it as was contemplated by the expert committee. But it has recommended discontinuing the merit list announced for the top-10 ranks for both HSC and SSC results with effect from the forthcoming exams.

Committee and Board member R C Patel said,“From this academic year onwards, only percentile-based listing will be declared.”

The decision has come after three meetings of the expert committee headed by Sudhir Mankad, former Chief Secretary of Gujarat,to discuss the issues of scrapping of Class X exams, introducing semester system and doing away with the merit list system. The committee had earlier recommended lowering of pass marks from 35 to 33 for Class X.

According to sources,it has also been recommended to have two sets of exams at the SSC level, depending on students wanting to pursue higher education.
