The GUjarat Assembly on Wednesday passed the Sardar Patel University (Amendment) Bill,2009,which sought to amend the Sardar Patel University Act,1955.
The Bill was moved by state Education Minister Ramanlal Vora. The Bill seeks to provide for one representative,elected by members of the Anand district panchayat as an ordinary fellow in the senate of the university.
When the Act was formulated initially in 1955,Anand was not a district,but a taluka of Kheda district. As per provisions of the Act,a Kheda district panchayat representative was included as a fellow of the universitys senate.
Moving the Bill,Vora said Anand came into being as a new district after the reconstitution of Kheda district,and accordingly the Anand district panchayat was also constituted in 1999. Since the university,located in Vallabh Vidyanagar,falls within the limits of the Anand taluka of Anand district,it became necessary to amend the Act and make provisions for an elected member of Anand district panchayat instead of Kheda district as an ordinary fellow in the senate.
The amended Bill also provides that the education minister will not be a member of the university senate.
