(File photo)An argument over honking during a traffic jam escalated into a brawl during which a couple was allegedly assaulted and abused in Vadodara late on Thursday night.
Three persons were arrested in the case on Friday.
The incident occurred when the complainant and his wife were on their way to visit a Ganesh Chaturthi pandal on their motorcycle.
As per the FIR lodged at Raopura police station, the incident occurred around 11pm Thursday when the complainant, Harish Patni, and his wife were driving through the Doodhwala mohalla near Nyay mandir when his motorcycle was caught in heavy traffic due to the festival rush. Around the same time, one Sabir Rajab was driving a car in the same lane.
The FIR stated that Rajab allegedly continued honking and, on being asked by the complainant to wait as there was a jam, got down his car and approached the complainant to “voluntarily assault” him while “uttering obscene and abusive words”.

Inspector KK Jadav of Raopura police station told The Indian Express that three of the four accused mentioned in the FIR, including Rajab, have been arrested. Jadav said, “We have arrested three accused — Sabir, Zahid alias Javed Rajab, and Zainul Sabir… The incident was a usual traffic face-off and did not escalate into a law and order problem as the police had promptly responded to the situation. The search is on for the fourth accused.”
All accused in the FIR have been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 296(B) (obscene act in public), and 54 (abettor present when offence is committed).
On Friday, the Vadodara city police, along with a unit of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), also took out a flag march in the area and advised traders to ensure that the narrow lanes do not witness haphazard parking by the visiting customers, causing further traffic issues.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone III, Abhishek Gupta, who was present in the flag march, said, “We conducted a flag march at Doodhwala Mohalla to emphasise on law and order. A CRPF unit accompanied the city police… We met and interacted with the traders of the cycle bazaar. Since the lanes are narrow, the traders have been advised to ensure that the customers do not park their vehicles outside the marked yellow lines near the shops. We have also asked them to install CCTV cameras. Due to the Ganesh Chaturthi festivities, the area is witnessing rush and there are minor traffic issues but the police are alert and present at the spot.”
