Rs 367-cr NABARD aid for state’s underground drainage networks

The National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development has sanctioned a loan of Rs 367.98 crore for 84 underground drainage networks in as many talukas across the state.

The National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned a loan of Rs 367.98 crore for 84 underground drainage networks in as many talukas across the state.

These projects involve construction of underground centralised sewerage collection,treatment and disposal system,said an official release issued on Wednesday.

Sanctioning of such a large-scale aid by NABARD has been done for the first time under the its Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF). The project will be implemented by Panchayat Rural Housing and Rural Development Department and it is expected to be completed by March 2014,said the release.

Meanwhile,the loan amount sanctioned by NABARD to the state under RIDF has reached Rs 10,297 crore,taking Gujarat in the top three states in terms of utilisation of RIDF loans.

Of the total RIDF assistance,28% has been availed by Narmada Water Resources,Water Supply and Kalpasar Department,whereas 22% has gone to the Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board,and 24% to Roads and Buildings Department.

Programmes for which the support has been extended to Gujarat include irrigation projects like Narmada main canal and Saurashtra branch canal and its distribution system,check dams,rural drinking water through pipeline,rural roads,Aanganwadis,primary and community centres and salinity ingression projects.
