The Bharuch Railway Police Thursday seized Rs 27 lakh in cash from a passenger of a Valsad-bound train at Ankleshwar railway station during routine checking as part of the surveillance for the ongoing Lok Sabha polls.
According to a statement from the Vadodara GRP, police personnel at Ankleshwar railway station pulled aside a man, who had alighted with a shoulder bag from the 12912 Haridwar-Valsad Express on Thursday for scrutiny. Sub-inspector JB Mithapara, who was led the team of four police personnel, found a black polythene bag inside the shoulder bag, that contained bundles of Indian currency notes amounting to Rs 27 lakh.
During the investigation, the man identified himself as Yogesh Harumal Pritamani, 34, a trader and Dahod resident, the police said.
“Since the accused had no satisfactory explanation about the cash or any evidence to show its source, the cash was seized as per the guidelines of the Model Code of Conduct of the Lok Sabha polls. The Flying Squad Teams as well as the Income Tax Department has been informed about the seizure for further investigation,” the release stated.
