Five unidentified people intercepted a truck laden with sarees and dress materials on the highway in Kamrej taluka in Surat district on Wednesday night and escaped with the goods worth Rs 7 lakh. The robbers also drove away the truck after throwing the driver and the cleaner off the vehicle. According to details of the case, the truck driven by Vijaypal Ramprasad had taken the parcels from Kadodara on Wednesday and was on its way to Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh to deliver the goods. The truck was nearing Valak village in Kamrej taluka when the robbers, travelling in a dumber, overtook the truck and got into the drivers cabin. Before Vijaypal and cleaner Sonipal Shivmangal could react, the robbers overpowered them and tied them with ropes. The gang then dropped Vijaypal and Sonipal near Kharel village in Navsari district and escaped with the truck and Rs 20,000 cash. Vijaypal then borrowed money from the villagers and informed the transport company about the incident. Vijaypal and Sonipal after returning to Surat filed a complaint with the Kamrej police station. Sub-Inspector P D Vaghela said: We have learnt that a gang is active on the highway and they are into this type of robberies. We have passed on a message to all the checkposts in Gujarat and Maharashtra to keep tab on the trucks bearing registration number (UP-78BT-577). He added: We suspect that some of the robbers might have kept a watch at the transport office and chased the truck, which was on its way to Uttar Pradesh.
