To sensitise people about the need to segregate solid waste at source, the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) will send volunteers door-to-door and persuade people to handover biodegradable and non-degradable waste separately to the civic body.

At its meeting Wednesday, the RMC standing committee approved a proposal to engage 180 Swachhta Swayamsevaks or volunteers for the purpose. The proposal said the volunteers will go from one house to another and sensitise people about the need to keep their biodegradable and non-bio-degradable waste separate and hand both type of wastes separately to a mini-tipper van that RMC sends every day to collect waste.

“Currently, residents dump a mixture of wet waste and dry waste in tipper vans. This makes recovery and disposal at transfer stations difficult,” the proposal said. “If wet waste and dry waste are collected separately, wet waste can be used for composting and dry waste can be used for generating energy. Therefore, a need is felt to launch a public awareness campaign in all wards…,” it added.

The proposal said that those who are holding a certificate of sanitary inspector (SI) or those pursuing an SI certificate course will be eligible to enroll themselves with RMC as volunteers for this campaign.

The RMC will pay them Rs 75 honorarium per day and Rs 25 transportation cost every day. The volunteers will be required to meet people of their allotted area from 8 am to 10 am and sensitise them about the need to segregate waste at source itself.

The proposal also said that a maximum of 10 volunteers will be engaged per ward and they will be asked to give honorary services for a maximum of three months.
