A 35-year-old man allegedly poisoned his mother before consuming it and killing himself in Rajkot, police said Monday. In a purported video left behind by Sikandar Lingadiya, who was working as a driver, he said he was ending his life for failing to “do anything substantial for the family”.
Sikandar and his mother Amina Lingadiya (80) were found unconscious at their residence in Ghanshyam Nagar on Kothariya Road on March 25. The duo were rushed to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay (PDU) Government Hospital in Rajkot. Amin died late that night, while Sikandar died in the early hours of March 26.
On Monday, the Bhaktinagar police said the son had poisoned the mother before taking his own life. Based on a complaint filed by Reshma Kapadvanji (45), daughter of Amina, Bhaktinagar police booked Sikandar late Sunday night for his mother’s murder.
Reshma came to know about the incident when a neighbour of Amina informed that her mother and brother were lying unconscious inside their house in Ghanshyam Nagar at around 5 pm on March 25, the FIR states.
As her mother and brother were undergoing treatment at PDU Hospital, Reshma switched on the Internet on her mobile phone around 10 pm on March 25 when she came across the video Sikandar had shared with her on WhatsApp, the FIR reads citing Reshma. In the video, Sikandar said he had given a herbicide to his mother and was consuming the same poison himself as he had not been able to do much for his mother, sister, his late elder brother’s wife, his nephews and nieces, the complainant told police.
“The complainant showed us the video on her phone. We also noted that the video was recorded in a phone belonging to Sikandar that we had seized for the purpose of investigation after the incident was reported on March 25,” Mayurdhwajsinh Sarvaiya, inspector incharge of Bhaktinagar police station, told The Indian Express.
“While we have not recovered any container of herbicide from the Lingadiyas’ residence, we are waiting for results of analysis of their viscera. We are hopeful that analysis will identify the kind of poison Sikandar had used for murdering his mother and then killing himself,” he added.
