Professor declares plans for new sports medicine college in MSU,V-C unaware of proposal

In yet another major announcement, the MS University has decided to have its own sports medicine branch, which will enable the university to train students in a specialised category of medicine.

This was declared by the director of the Physical Education (PE),Parsottam Thumar. The branch of sports medicine would be a hit,MSU sources claimed,as Vadodara is becoming a hub for sports related activities including cricket, hockey and other sports.

Sources added that if the idea takes off it will be the second such college in the country after the one in West Bengal.

However,it seems difficult in the time to come. Though the director of PE has already announced about the new college, the vice-chancellor is not aware as to how they are going to do it.

MSU V-C Ramesh Goyal said,“I don’t know how he made this announcement. If it happens,I will be happy, but at this point,we have not even received the proposal of how it will be established.”

He added: “It will need support of the other departments including medicine; permissions from the Senate and the Syndicate. The most important part is funds. The university will either go for funds to the Gujarat government or will have to look for sponsors. It is a lengthy process. But first,we need a detailed proposal. The proposal has not been sent so far,” said Goyal.

Several projects such as the unique identification code has been languishing for four years now. The MSU going international is yet another project, which has more air than substance. Earlier, several other announcements were made by the university. Not even half of them have been implemented so far.

Asked when he is going to submit the proposal,Thumar said: “I will submit it soon. I have written to the colleges who were planning to start the course including the university in Patan for their syllabi.”
