In a meeting to mark World Plumbing Day on Tuesday, All Gujarat Plumber Association (AGPA) has urged the state government to issue professional identity cards and certificates to plumbers to officially recognise their skills.

Association chairman Suresh Chavda said that the association was not interested in coverage of its members under Garib Kalyan Melas or any such other sops, but a well established identity to get a respectable place in the society. He said that there were 2 lakh plumbers in the state, of whom 10,000 were members of the association which would run a drive in near future to increase its membership.

He said that the demands of plumbers were nearly eight months old by the government remained inactive. “No plumber will vote for the BJP in next elections, if their demands were not fulfilled,” he said, adding that the next round of expansion would be started in Bihar and Orissa. The association would take out a Pani Bachao rally in the city from Malav Talav to Paldi char rasta on March 22, he said.

He said the chief minister would often taking pride in associating himself with worker class, but was not sensitive about woes of working class. Instead of doing something concrete for their professional growth and modernisation of skills, he holds Garib Kalyan Mela to hand out doles to people at the cost of their self-respect, which was not proper, he said.
