Panel begins probe into graft charge against govt

THE Justice (retired) M B Shah and and M S Parikh Commission,which has been formed to probe into 14 allegations of corruption against the state government,on Monday began hearing on allegations of allotting eight crore square metre of land to Adani at throwaway prices.

Citizens for Democracy (CFD),an Ahmedabad-based non-government organisation,has moved the Commission,alleging the government has allotted land to Adani in and around Mundra in Kutch district at rates between Re 1 and Rs 32 per square metre.

“It is nothing but favouritism adopted by the government for certain industrial houses,” said CFD counsel Dipak Kiratsata.

“We have sought some documents from the government and it is likely to produce the same before the Commission next Monday when further hearing is scheduled,” he added.

The Commission held the hearing in-camera allowing only the parties concerned to attend the hearing.

The panel was appointed by the state government in August last year after Leader of the Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil and Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee chief Arjun Modhwadia submitted a memorandum before President Pratibha Patil regarding 17 different corruption allegations against the Narendra Modi government.

The Commission’s term ends on June 30.
