The Enforcement Directorate , along with the Gujarat police, conducted multiple searches at 20 locations across four states Monday as part of a money-laundering probe linked to alleged unauthorised streaming of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 matches by a “betting” website.

The raids were conducted in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru in Karnataka, Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu under provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against the “magicwin” website. “Incriminating” records as well as digital devices and cash of Rs 30 lakh were seized during the search, ED said in an official statement.

The agency launched an investigation after the Cyber Crime Police Station in Ahmedabad filed an FIR based on a complaint that the website (https://magicwin.games/) had unauthorisedly hosted/streamed/broadcasted ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 cricket matches.

The broadcast rights for the tournament were given to Star India Private Limited by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Notably, magicwin website is compatible with any internet browser (mobile, smart TV, computer) through which the company’s paid content is broadcasted and allows the viewers to watch it for free.

“The website indulged in illegal activities like betting on live cricket matches and other games. The broadcast of live matches of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 was without any subscription fee and done in order to tempt the gullible people to bet on their website,” it alleged.

In addition to the cash seizures, accounts worth around Rs 2 crore belonging to the website were frozen and crypto wallets containing deposits to the tune of Rs 12 crore were identified, ED stated. The agency has asked crypto exchanges not to liquidate the crypto currencies from these wallets.
