A first in India, the Gujarat High Court has introduced an online bail application system for jailed convicts and undertrial prisoners.
The new system introduced at Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad aims to replace the present system under which prisoners across the state send their bail/parole/furlough applications from jail through post. The applications through post take any time between 4-10 days and the online application is seen to be a faster, effective way to process bail applications. The bail seeking prisoners are expected to get orders on their application within 48 hours from the HC.
Sometimes, especially in the cases of bail sought for some emergency reason, the prisoners application would reach the court after the date on which the bail was sought rendering the application futile, said Registrar General G R Udhwani.
With the new online system, the application would reach the HC registry immediately and it would be placed before the concerned court for adjudication within 48 hours, he added.
To make the system viable, special arrangements have been made at the Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad. The prisoners are to submit their applications to the Superintendent, who would file it online to the HC registry. Registry would make sure that each application is put up for adjudication before the concerned bench of HC for adjudication within 48 hours of receipt, said Udhwani. HC registry officials said that the initiative was part an ongoing effort to improve the system and to make it more people friendly.
