Four days after the body of Mozambique national Lawrenco Fernando (25) was recovered from a pond at Khatamba in Vadodara district after the cab he was travelling in allegedly fell into the water body, Fernando’s family is set to arrive in Vadodara on Friday to complete his last rites.

Officials of Parul University in Vadodara, where Fernando was studying Masters in Public Health, said the High Commission of India in Mozambique and the university have sponsored one ticket each for Fernando’s relatives to arrive in India. The body is currently in the cold room at SSG Hospital.

Vandit Anjaria, Director of the Office of International Affairs in Parul University, said the university had sent a representative to SSG Hospital to oversee the procedure of handing over the body. It had also connected with the High Commissioner of India in Mozambique as well as the Embassy of Mozambique in India.

Anjaria said, “The High Commissioner of India in Mozambique visited Fernando’s family to extend support they might need to arrive in India to complete his final rites… The university was also in touch with the family… while they had expressed their wish to visit, they faced financial constraints.”

“So, the university decided to sponsor one to and fro ticket for one family member. The Indian High Commission in Mozambique sponsored the air tickets for a second family member and so, two of Fernando’s five siblings will arrive in India on Saturday.”

Anjaria said Fernando’s ageing parents are not in a condition to travel. “The burial will be held on Saturday in the presence of an official from the Embassy of Mozambique… Fernando was a sincere student, who was never involved in any controversy and had a bright future awaiting him.”

Meanwhile, the Varnama police station in Vadodara is yet to apprehend Deepak, the driver of the cab who had allegedly escaped unhurt in the accident and later claimed that Fernando was “safe”. The Vadodara rural police said that in the postmortem report, the SSG hospital has said that the cause of death would be determined after the visceral reports arrive.
