Monsoon makes delayed entry in Gujarat; rain in various parts

As the southwest monsoon made its onset in Gujarat Sunday, much later than its normal onset, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that parts of the state will receive heavy rainfall until June 30.

On Sunday, 82 talukas across the state received showers with Ghogha in Bhavnagar recording the highest rainfall of 75 mm.

“The southwest monsoon progressed to Gujarat and the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) is passing through Veraval, Vallabh Vidyanagar on Sunday. It will progress into Kheda, Anand, Gir Somnath in the next 48 hours,” IMD regional director Manorama Mohanty told The Indian Express. Mohanty said Cyclone Biparjoy delayed the onset of the monsoon in the state.

Other parts that received heavy rainfall included Barwala in Botad that received 44 mm, Amreli 42 mm, Bhavnagar 41 mm, Mangrol in Surat 37 mm, Vagra in Bharuch and Gondal in Rajkot 33 mm each, and Sihor in Bhavnagar 31 mm.

Last year, the southwest monsoon marked its onset in the state on June 13, two days ahead of its scheduled arrival of June 15. Similarly, in 2021, the state reported the arrival of the southwest monsoon in its southern parts of Valsad on June 9, nearly five days earlier than the normal date of the onset of monsoon.

“The southwest monsoon has further advanced into the remaining parts of the Central Arabian Sea, some parts of north Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, some parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana, remaining parts of Uttarakhand and most parts of Himachal Pradesh and some more parts of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, today June 25,” the IMD stated in its bulletin.

On the onset in Ahmedabad, Mohanty stated that the conditions are favourable for the progress in the next two days.
Meantime, as per the IMD forecast, heavy rains are very likely in the North Gujarat districts, including Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Mahisagar, Mehsana and Dahod; in the districts of Saurashtra, namely Bhavnagar, Amreli, Rajkot and Jamnagar on June 26.

It will cover districts of the South Gujarat region, including Surat and Bharuch, and the districts of Saurashtra, namely Gir Somnath, on June 27.

On June 28, heavy to very heavy rains are very likely in isolated places of Vadodara, while heavy rains are very likely in the South Gujarat districts of Chhota Udepur, Bharuch, Surat, Dangs, Navsari, Valsad, Tapi, and in Daman and Dadra Nagar Haveli, and in Saurashtra’s Bhavnagar.

For June 29, the met department has issued a warning against “very likely heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places” of Surat. Heavy rains are predicted across South Gujarat districts such as Dangs, Navsari, Valsad, Tapi and in Daman and Dadra Nagar Haveli, and in the Saurashtra districts of Amreli and Bhavnagar.

“Heavy rains are very likely in the districts of Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Navsari, Valsad, and in the districts of Saurashtra namely Porbandar, Junagadh and Gir Somnath,” IMD’s weather forecast for June 30 states.
