Almost two week after he stabbed his wife and minor son to death and injured his parents before slitting his own wrist, a 35-year-old man in Surat was arrested, hours after he was discharged from the hospital where he was admitted for his injuries. Sarthana police arrested Smit Jiyani on Wednesday. Police said that before the murders, Jiyani had a quarrel with his wife over his online business. Surat Assistant Commissioner of Police, A division, V R Patel said, “Jiyani was discharged from the hospital late on Tuesday night. We arrested him early on Wednesday morning. We have carried out reconstruction of the crime. He was taken to his house amid strict police presence. He had a quarrel with his wife a night before committing the crime. We are trying to get more details from the accused.” According to Sarthana police, Jiyani, a native of Savarkundla in Amreli district, used a knife to slit the throats of his wife Hiral, 30, and son Chahit while they were sleeping. He then attacked his father Labhubhai, 55, and mother Vilasben, 53. The attacks took place around 7 am on December 27. Police registered a case of murder and attempt to murder against Jiyani. Police sources said that a few days ago, Jiyani tried to commit suicide by slitting his throat with a glass shard from a window of the hospital bathroom.
