(Express File Photo)A car in which a family from Ahmedabad was travelling to the Union Territory of Diu off Una coast for a holiday allegedly ran over an elderly man sleeping on a footpath in Una of Gir Somnath district after the driver lost control of the vehicle early Thursday.
The deceased have been identified as Dinesh Gandhi (75). Police said nine persons, including the driver, were injured in the incident. The accident took place at 7.22 am when the driver, Yatin Sigal, lost control of the car while driving through Tower Chowk area of Una town.
Purported footage recorded by a CCTV camera showed the car first hitting a bike parked on the roadside before running over Gandhi who was asleep on the footpath in front of a juice centre. The car came to a halt after crashing into the shutter of a shop.
“Gandhi was killed on the spot… The nine persons in the car, including the driver, sustained injuries. Three of them suffered serious injuries,” said M N Rana, Inspector in charge of Una police station.
He added that Sigal has been detained and booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the Indian Penal Code.
