Man makes hoax call to detonate bomb, detained in Ahmedabad

On the eve of Independence Day, the Ahmedabad City Police, already on high alert for suspicious activity, went into overdrive when its control room received a call from an anonymous person at 1.30 pm, claiming that he would detonate an explosive device in the city on August 15.

The Crime Branch tracked down the caller through cell tower triangulation and detained 24-year-old Arihant Vinod Kankaria, a resident of Sardarnagar.

Officers said they did not believe that there was anything malicious in the threat but added that Kankaria appeared to be mentally disturbed, as he had not performed well in his CA course. An inspector said that the bomb threat was a hoax and that there was “no credible threat” to the city.
