Man gets seven years in jail for pouring acid on wifes face

Surat district court has sentenced a man to seven years imprisonment for pouring acid on his wifes face damaging her right eye.

Chandrika Kharwa (30),a resident of Vishramnagar in Ved road,got married to Kaniaya Kharwa (35),a resident of Mumbai,20 years ago. Since last couple of years,Kaniya used to quarrel with his wife suspecting her involvement in an extra marital affair with some youth.

Fed up of mental and physical torture,Chandrika left her in-laws place in Mumbai in 2010 and came to Surat with her two children and started staying at her parents home.

After passing a couple of months alone in Mumbai,Kaniaya came to Surat on August 8,2010. When he found that Chandrika went to her elder sisters house at Ruderpura,he went there to meet her. During their talks,he again raised the extra marital affair issue and started fighting with her. Kanaiya took out a bottle containing acid and threw it on her face and escaped from the spot.

Chandrika lost her right eye and had permanent patches on her face. A complaint was lodged with Athwalines police station by her. Police arrested Kaniaya and send him to jail after remand.

The judicial magistrate on Thursday evening announced judgment slapping seven years strict imprisonment and penalty of Rs 30,000 on him.
