One person died and another is in critical condition after an SUV plowed into the back of an Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) bus in the Chandkheda area of the city early on Friday morning.
Vikas Shukla, who was on the passenger seat, died due to the impact, while the driver of the car, Prakashkumar Shambhunath Singh (37), a resident of Sharan Residency in Chandkheda, is under hospital treatment, said DCP Traffic (West) Neeta Desai.
A rescue team from the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) had to use power tools to retrieve the two men from the mangled vehicle.
As of Friday morning, the ‘L’ Division Traffic police were in the process of filing an FIR based on a complaint by AMTS bus driver Pranavsinh Dashrathsinh Chavda.
Meanwhile, DCP Traffic (East) Safin Hasan confirmed that a broken bottle of alcohol had been recovered from the SUV, which was allegedly being driven at a considerable speed at the time of the incident. Local police will investigate the same, while blood samples would be drawn from the deceased and injured to check if they were intoxicated.
The incident took place at 7.30 am, when the bus that plies the route between Sarathi Bungalows and Vasna had stopped at Chandkheda bus stop on the side of the road to pick up passengers. It was then that the Mahindra SUV hit the right side of the bus from the back.
CCTV footage shows several other vehicles passing from the right lane next to the bus but the black SUV hitting it on its passenger side. The entire left side of the car was seen being sheared off by the impact of the collision.
Several passengers climbing up the bus were seen falling while others ran back to save themselves. None of the bus passengers were hurt in the incident. Further investigation is underway.
