Convicted of murdering fiancée in UK in 2020, man brought to Surat to serve remaining sentence

On September 16, 2020, the Leicester Crown Court convicted Jigukumar Sorthi for the murder of Bhavini Pravin. His family members, who live in Valsad, had filed a jail transfer request.

A person convicted of murdering his ex-fiancée was extradited from Leicester in the United Kingdom to Surat in Gujarat, after the approval of the extradition treaty between the two countries. Now, the convict, sentenced to 28 years of prison in 2020, will have to spend the rest of his sentence in Surat Central jail. On Tuesday, he was sent to Lajpore central jail.

On September 16, 2020, the Leicester Crown Court convicted Jigukumar Sorthi (24) for the murder of Bhavini Pravin (21), who was found with four stab wounds at her home on Moores Road in Leicester on March 2, 2020. The victim was staying with her parents.

Sources said that after the couple’s engagement, Pravin’s parents had pressured her not to marry Sorthi. Pravin had followed her parents’ wish, and had stopped meeting Sorthi.

Two hours after the incident, Sorthi, a resident of East Park Road in Leicester, surrendered before Spinney Hill Police. He was arrested under murder charges and prosecuted by the court.

Sorthi’s parents reside in Valsad in Gujarat. His family members had filed a jail transfer request.

On Monday morning, Assistant Commissioner of Police M K Rana from Surat along with a Special Operation group staffer and Surat crime branch police officials reached Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. In the presence of Delhi police, UK escort police handed over Sorthi to Surat police. The entire process was videographed by the UK escort police.

Sorthi was sent to Surat Central jail on Tuesday after all laid down procedures. Surat Central Jail superintendent J M Desai said, “We have got the custody of Jigukumar Sorthi, and checked all official documents.”
