Lodhika GIDC to have natural effluent water filtering plant

This will be the last summer for Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation at Lodhika (Rajkot) to depend on external water sources. From next year,newly constructed wells will be recharged up to 40-50 feet level to meet water requirement of the industrial estate with over 1,000 units.

It will probably be the first industrial zone in Asia to implement a plan by which effluent water will be filtered naturally. A new drainage system,with 25 wells,has been designed to help absorption of effluent water in the soil and get it naturally filtered. The system will work like check-dams and help raise the underground water level and also deal with water scarcity in drought-prone Saurashtra region. The project will serve two purposes,said officials it will curb pollution by proper disposal of effluent water and help recharge the water table.

The Rs 20-crore project is likely to be completed before the monsoon sets in. The drainage network has been laid and the digging up of specially designed wells to store and filter the water,is on.

These wells,total 25 in numbers,with a depth of 30 feet,will collect around 4 MLD effluent water released from various units.

Project Manager Kishor Kadvani said: The wells have a special design with 30 holes on each side. When water will recede through these holes,it will naturally get filtered and help raise the water table.

At Lodhika GIDC,which is yet to get water supply from the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited,most of the units have bores or wells. But by summer,the water table goes down and these units have to buy water,which increasing the production cost.

This drainage system is planned by Kadvani,who runs a spice factory at GIDC.

Kadvani added: Besides,this will help curb pollution. There will be zero discharge of effluent water in the open.

The 50 per cent cost of this project is being borne by the state government,35 per cent by GIDC and the rest will be collectively borne by the unit owners at Lodhika.
