In a bid to restore the heritage of the city’s old buildings, local architects are now offering free consultancy to government departments.

According to the Vadodara centre of the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA),prominent architect and Padma Bhushan awardee Charles Correa had suggested architects from the city to offer their services to restore aesthetic qualities of various buildings. He recently saw the city’s heritage buildings, including Nyay Mandir

Now the architects’ body wants to help government departments in restoring and preserving the grandeur of the bygone era.

IIA Treasurer Mihir Parikh said: “When we took Correa to visit Nyay Mandir,he was aghast with the signboards on walls. He suggested that authorities could consult architects, who will be able to help utilise the space without turning edifices into eyesores.”

Architects have also discussed the pigeon menace at M S University’s Faculty of Arts with the authorities concerned.

“One of the issues affecting the architecture of the building is the pigeon menace. If the (university) authorities are willing, separate nests for pigeons could be constructed, which can look aesthetically appealing. The city’s architects can participate in restoring its (the building’s) glory,” added Parikh.

Meanwhile, the Vadodara centre of IIA is organising a photography competition for heritage enthusiasts.
