A 19-year-old labourer from Madhya Pradesh working at the Sabarmati Ashram redevelopment project site was found hanging from a tree near Abhay Ghat, the resting place of former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, in Ahmedabad on Friday morning.
Ranip police stated that the labourer has allegedly committed suicide for unknown reasons and a case of accidental death has been registered.
Police seized his phone and launched an investigation.
The deceased has been identified as Mohitsinh Pramodsinh, a native of Umariya Dhara village of Shihora tehsil in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh.
According to police, Mohitsinh was found hanging from a neem tree with a plastic string being used to tie cement blocks at around 7 am.
After the body was found, the labour contractor with whom Mohitsinh was working informed the police.
Sources said that Mohitsinh’s body has been sent to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for postmortem, and his family has been informed about the incident.
Sources said that Mohitisinh was working as a wooden polish labourer. He was living at the labour camp near Abhay Ghat at the Ashram redevelopment site.
The Gujarat government is implementing the Rs 1200 crore Sabarmati Ashram redevelopment project on the 55 acres of land of the ashram.
As part of the project, a total of 36 buildings, which hold historical significance, are being restored by the Mahatma Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram Memorial Trust formed by the Gujarat government.
