It is been three years since Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally launched the Kisan Suryoday Yojana – an initiative to provide electricity to farmers for irrigation during daytime instead of at night – but scheme is yet to be implemented in nine districts.
These are seven districts from Saurashtra – Bhavnagar, Botad, Rajkot, Devbhumi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Morbi and Porbandar – as well as Kutch and Dang, data tabled in the recently-concluded Monsoon Session of the state legislature said.
As on March, the government has provided 2.58 lakh electricity connections in 4,028 villages under the scheme. These villages are getting eight hours of three-phase electricity supply for agricultural purposes during the day. However, 16.93 lakh connections are pending in 32 of the 33 districts of the state, the government said in a written reply to an unstarred question from Congress MLA from Somnath, Vipul Chudasma.
The highest pendency is in Rajkot, where none of the 2.19 lakh connections have been provided. Banaskantha, where 1,489 connections have been provided, has the second highest pendency of 1.51 lakh connections. Similarly, Amreli (1.34 lakh), Jamnagar (1.09 lakh) and Bhavnagar (1.08 lakh) have higher pendency among the districts.
The predominantly tribal district of Dahod is the only district with no pending connections. Here, 22,436 electricity connections have been provided in 683 villages. Maximum connections under this scheme has been provided to Gir Somnath district (49,953) while 22,773 connections are still pending.
