JD(U),which is running the government in Bihar in alliance with the BJP,on Saturday announced to contest the Gujarat Assembly elections on its own and field more than 50 candidates, mostly in the tribal belt as also in areas with Muslim population.
This was announced by partys national general secretary Chandra Raj Singhvi at a media briefing here.
Asked if Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar will come to campaign for party candidates,Singhvi said Nitish Kumar,Sharad Yadav and other JD(U) leaders would certainly come to canvass for party candidates.
When reminded that Nitish Kumar had prevailed over BJP leadership to not allow Chief Minister Narendra Modi to campaign for BJP candidates in Bihar Assembly elections,Singhvi said it was for BJP leadership to reply the question.
Modi is a BJP leader and whether he is invited or not to any state or place in the country,is a concern of his party leadership and not of JD(U), Singhvi said.
However,he said there were many issues like the impact of the leaders on the electorates that was also considered for inviting or not inviting some particular leaders. Modis visit might have an adverse impact on the electoral results and that would have been the reason for not allowing Modi to address public meetings in Bihar. But he said it was again an issue concerning BJP,not JD(U).
Singhvi also made it clear that JD(U) contesting elections independently in Gujarat would not affect its relationship with NDA. Contesting elections separately and being a part of NDA were both separate issues.
In some states,we may have electoral understandings or alliances, but it does not mean that we can not contest independently in others, he added.
JD(U) leader attacked both the Congress and the BJP in Gujarat. While stating that development in Gujarat was confined around big cities only,he asked why were no industries set in smaller towns, particularly in tribal pockets. It indicated Modis lack of concern for tribal and the poor people and an unbalanced development,he further said.
As for Congress,he said Congress leaders had raised the issue of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to divert attention from corruption and price rise. He said his party would have no electoral alliances with Congress and Gujarat Parivartan Party.
JD(U) is currently confined to tribal areas of Bharuch and Narmada district. It has a lone MLA-Mahesh Vasava-son of former MP Chhotubhai Vasava.
