The Gujarat High Court has suggested that CCTV cameras be installed at points where ‘tyre killers’ are being installed on roads. The suggestion came during a hearing of a contempt petition on road and traffic issues when the state submitted that it is installing ‘tyre killers’ on roads.

The state government also submitted that there was a communication addressed in October 2022 indicating that it was mulling the installation of ‘tyre killers’.

“Our suggestion is, you also install one CCTV where the tyre killer is installed because we have seen there’s a novel method reported on how they defeat this also…It is impossible to imbibe that idea of a good citizen in some persons,” the bench of Justices AS Supehia and Justice MR Mengedey remarked orally.

Meanwhile, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), in its affidavit filed through deputy municipal commissioner Mihir Patel dated August 9, submitted that in a communication on August 3, all zones of the corporation have been directed to identify spots/places where wrong side driving is rampant. The civic body added that it would install more such tyre killers after collecting data and taking into account other factors such as budgetary provisions.

The affidavit, in its annexure, also contains a communication from the joint police commissioner (traffic) office, listing 18 sites in the city where wrong side driving is found to be rampant. Fifteen of these sites are on the SG Highway. These include areas such as below the Sola bridge, Gota 4 cross roads, Karnavati 4 cross roads, Iskcon 4 cross roads and Pakwan 4 cross roads, among others.

The court has kept the matter next for August 31.
