Jammu & Kashmir, which for the first time participated in the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) this year, saw industry players pledging to invest Rs 3,000 crore in the Union Territory (UT) at end of the three-day summit, J&K’s Lieutenant Governor (LG), Manoj Sinha, said on Friday.
Hardselling J&K and inviting industrialists to invest, Sinha said the UT has the “cheapest power” and as per National Crime Records Bureau data — tabled in the Parliament — “it has a crime rate lower than Gujarat and many other states”. This was the first time that the VGGS provided a “platform” for smaller states to attract investments. Apart from J&K, a few northeastern states also participated in the summit.
“Come, invest in J&K. If you are 75 years old… then after coming there (J&K), it (life span) will definitely increase by five years… such atmosphere is there in J&K,” the LG said while concluding his speech at the valedictory function that was also addressed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Sinha said that he is probably the first person from J&K to come to VGGS. “So far, J&K was known for different reasons. It was known for natural beauty and other reasons. Now, our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) and Home Minister (Amit Shah) have made J&K capable of participating in Vibrant Gujarat,” he added.
Referring to the industrial policy of J&K, the LG said that the incentives it offers are not available in any other state. He added that the policy has been framed under the guidelines by Shah himself.
“Attempts are being made in J&K. Due to the (industrial) policy, so far, investment (promises) worth Rs 90,000 crore have come. Investments of Rs 15,000 crore have already landed on ground. Attempts are on to convert the received proposals into reality. Difficulties were there… which have been addressed successfully to a large extent under the guidance of the home minister (Shah),” he added.
Sinha said that works related to highways and tunnels worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore are in progress in J&K and rail, road and air connectivity is much better than before. The state is full of natural resources and the handloom skills of the local people are of top quality, he said, adding that “…MoUs worth Rs 3,000 crore have been signed between industry leaders of Gujarat and J&K’s industry department.”
