Commissioner Agarwal refused to comment on the issue. The Surat municipal commissioner has requested three cremation homes in the city to increase their capacity and consider expansion.
On Tuesday evening, Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal held a meeting with trustees of Kurukshetra cremation home in Jehangirpura, Ramnath Ghela cremation home in Piplod, and Muktidham cremation home in Limbayat, and told them to expand their capacity.
Harish Umrigar, trustee of Ramnath Ghela cremation home, told The Indian Express, “In the meeting with the municipal commissioner, the topic of expansion was discussed and we agreed on it. SMC had also assured us to provide the required grants.”
Sources said Kurukshetra cremation home has 11 wooden pyres and 10 gas pyres, while Ramnath Ghela has eight wooden pyres and five gas pyres. Muktidham cremation home has four gas pyres and three wooden pyres.
Commissioner Agarwal refused to comment on the issue.
