In multiple raids, 31 quacks arrested in Surat

Pandesara is dominated by people migrating for  work mostly from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Maharashtra among other states. The Pandesara police had during night patrolling in these areas had identified the clinics run by quacks.

At least 31 quacks were arrested from different localities in multiple raids carried out in Surat, the police said on Wednesday.

Acting on the directions of Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut, teams from Pandesara police, Special Operation Group and Surat Municipal Corporation, raided 31 fake clinics in Pandesara and Dindoli on Tuesday and Wednesday.

During the raids, the team demanded necessary documents which the accused failed to show, following which 31 were arrested, said Pandesara police Inspector H M Gadhvi. They were arrested under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Gujarat Medical Practitioner’s Act.

Gadhvi said, “We have arrested 15 quacks during the raids. We had sent dummy patients to some places and they were given medicines by these quack doctors. Some of them had worked in clinics and hospitals. Majority of the accused are from UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal, among others. We have also seized medicines and medical equipment from their clinics.”

Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut said, “We have taken the details of all the accused and will ensure that they don’t open such fake clinics again.” The teams seized injections, medicines, and syrups worth lakhs during these raids.

SOG police Inspector A P Chaudhary said, “We will continue our drive in other areas of the city and identify the locations where illegal clinics are running.”
