Increase voting duration to improve voter participation, says BJP leader
Bhopal: Joining the debate initiated by CM Narendra Modi on the issue of compulsory voting, senior Madhya Pradesh BJP leader Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat has suggested raising the duration of voting from one day to a week to enhance the poll percentage.
He said: Compulsory voting is against the spirit of democracy. People should be given more time to vote as it is a question of full five years of governance for them. By enhancing the period of voting and allowing people to vote any time they feel convenient, the voting percentage is bound to increase without making it mandatory.
He said the Election Commission should start this on a pilot basis. Shekhawat, who is considered close to former Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, said the idea of holding simultaneous elections for both Lok Sabha and the state assemblies was first mooted by him at Indore. Justifying MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhans demand on the issue of holding polls simultaneously,he said elections and enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct for polls affect the development process.
Chouhan had written letters to all MPs and MLAs across the country on the merits of holding simultaneous elections.Even J-K CM Omar Abdullah had agreed on the issue during his recent visit to Bhopal.
