IIT Roorkee team visits Vadodara, to examine projects of civic body
Along with the VMC officials, the team visited Ajwa reservoir, Nimeta water treatment plant as well as the confluence point of Surya River and Vishwamitri and also held a meeting with officials of various departments

Aimed at making Vadodara “future ready” to deal with the consequences of climate change as well as to make projects of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) more “effective and efficient”, a four-member team of IIT Roorkee visited crucial infrastructure of the civic body on Saturday.
The team will examine water supply, drainage networks as well as the VMC’s flood mitigation plan and prepare a comprehensive report to assist the civic body in implementing projects for “better usage” of natural resources, sources said.
Led by Professor Dr Arun Kumar, Emeritus Fellow at HRED, IIT Roorkee, the team of experts arrived on Saturday, on the invitation of Municipal Commissioner Arun Mahesh Babu. Along with the VMC officials, the team visited Ajwa reservoir, Nimeta water treatment plant as well as the confluence point of Surya River and Vishwamitri and also held a meeting with officials of various departments.
Head of Department and Executive Engineer (Water Works), In-charge Additional City Engineer (Drainage Project and Sewage works) and Executive Engineer (Road Projects) Dharmik Dave told this newspaper that the team of IIT experts will collect data from the VMC and prepare a comprehensive report within a few months. “They are looking at our flood mitigation and flood management programme, along with water supply systems, drainage networks and energy efficiency solar projects. They will collect data from during their two-day visit and then prepare a comprehensive report after a thorough analysis, within a few months… One of the major focuses of the visit is to also make the city “future ready” by reducing the usage of clean water for industries and irrigation. We plan to achieve this by using treated wastewater for industries and irrigation.”
Dave added that the IIT team may also return to the city for a second visit, if needed. “Their opinion and recommendations will help us modify existing systems or even come up with new systems for better life for people.”
Speaking to media persons, Prof Kumar, who is also an Independent Director at Kerala State Electricity Board Ltd., and also the Chairman- Technical Committee on Hydro Research, Ministry of Power, said, “Our purpose is to see what all can be done and what are the issues facing the city of Vadodara… We will also be visiting the places where the civic body needs help and in the places where they have initiated action. Considering climate change parameters, a recommendation can be done so that the civic body can work effectively…”
