In an attempt to do away with the rote learning system in school,Educational Initiatives Pvt Ltd (EIPL),an organisation set up by IIM-Ahmedabad alumni, has initiated a programme for school teachers to formulate analytical questions that force students to think rather than mug up answers.

Teachers from over 50,000 schools across the country will participate in a Question Making competition and EPIL will formulate a standard question bank for various subjects.

“We are organising the Question Making competition for the second time. It will basically help change the way in which question papers are formulated in schools,” said Vaishali Shah,Senior Communication Manager,EIPL. She added: “The Indian education system is primarily based on rote learning and not analytical reasoning.

The competition is an effort to motivate the teachers, who can revolutionise the clichéd way in which the question papers are prepared in schools.”

The teachers will have to make three analytical questions each in English,Hindi,Maths,Science and Social Studies. The questions will be evaluated by a panel of experts to formulate a question bank.

“After the first competition, the questions came as a shock to students as easy problems asked with a twist seemed ‘out of syllabus’ to them. But this is just the beginning. Teachers are trying their best to make classes more analytical and interactive. The aim is to make students understand, comprehend and analyse the questions, instead of simply mugging up the syllabus,” said Shah.

Also, the analysis of answer sheets of the students will make teachers understand the thought process of a student and also know the areas of improvement.
