Housewives,MBAs among 57 sleuths recruited by CID

The Gujarat CID (intelligence) has taken housewives, former employees of corporate firms, engineers and MBA graduates, among others,on board to train them as intelligence officers

The Gujarat CID (intelligence) has taken housewives, former employees of corporate firms, engineers and MBA graduates, among others,on board to train them as intelligence officers (IO). They are among the second batch of 57 sub-inspectors who have been directly recruited as part of a dedicated intelligence team which the state government’s intelligence branch has been building up for the past couple of years. Five women IOs were taken last year for the first time. This year, the number has shot up to 17. Most of these women are from rural Gujarat. Some of them are already part of the constabulary who preferred the intelligence branch over armed and unarmed sub-inspectors.

Officials say that most women preferred the intelligence department in the belief that it would not require 24×7 duty hours, like the unarmed police who are posted at police stations and whose job hours are odd. Some joined it because of the glamour associated with the job of a “spy”.

“I chose IB because I think it will suit my personal as well as professional life. I have a family to take care of and I wanted to join the police force. By joining the IB,I will have both the purposes solved,” said Kavina Trivedi (named changed on request),one of the housewives who have joined the IB.

Originally from a village in Saurashtra,Trivedi still aspires to become an IPS officer some day. Prithvi (name changed),a resident of Ahmedabad district, also preferred the intelligence over his previous company Cairn Energy,a well-known oil and gas company. He said he wanted to join the police force and got selected for IB. He said that he had been appearing for civil services after completing BSc from Gujarat university.

The selected team will now be trained in surveillance, information gathering and undercover operations, among others, for nine months at Karai Police Academy in Gandhinagar. For this, the academy has been hiring visiting faculties from other intelligence agencies, including retired officers of RAW.

Officials said these IOs will undergo two types of training, including basic policing and intelligence gathering. They said that 80 per cent of training was based on basic policing while 20 per cent would include intelligence gathering related training. The first batch of such recruits (57) have already been posted in the different branches of the CID (intelligence). The batch had only five women, all of whom were placed on desk jobs.

Additional DGP Ashish Bhatia, chairman of recruitment board for police sub-inspectors,said the total recruited police sub-inspectors (PSIs) include engineers,MBAs,LLBs and employees of corporate firms. Among the 509 selected PSIs,119 are females.

The state government invited applications online for the first time in order to bring transparency in the recruitment. After scrutiny of applications and physical test,22,000 applicants were selected for written exams. Out of them,1,578 appeared in interviews and out of them 509 were selected.
