Gujarat gets 90% rainfall so far, less than 2024; orange alert till September 6

Of the 206 dams, 106 are on high alert, 29 on alert; water storage reaches 80% or 44,6369 MCFT.

Gujarat has received season’s average rainfall of 90 per cent till August 31, since the onset of the Southwest monsoon on June 15.

With the weather department’s forecast of very heavy rainfall in the coming week, the rainfall is expected to increase. The monsoon is expected to withdraw from Gujarat by September 15.

The rainfall in the state is less than previous monsoon season but higher than 2023. In 2024 as on August 31, an average rainfall of 111.18 per cent was recorded in the state as per State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), Gandhinagar. Similarly, in 2023, an average rainfall of 81.82 per cent was received during the same period.

During the last 24 hours till Sunday 5 pm, the state received an average rainfall of 12.86 mm with 118 talukas recording rainfall up to 50 mm and four talukas between 101-150 mm and one between 201 and 250 mm.

Halol taluka in Panchmahal received the highest of 250 mm during the 24 hours till Sunday 5 pm, followed by Umreth in Anand 120 mm, Kadana and Santrampur in Mahisagar 110 mm and 109 mm, respectively, and Shehra in Panchmahal 105 mm.

On Sunday, Kadana in Mahisagar received the highest rainfall of 76 mm within four hours – from 8 am to 12 pm.

Singvad in Dahod too received heavy rainfall of 58 mm in four hours – 6 am to 10 am.

Of the 206 dams in Gujarat, 106 are on high alert and 29 under alert as the total water storage in these 206 dams reaches 80 per cent or 44,6369 MCFT.

This monsoon season, 1,036 people have been rescued from the flood-affected areas so far and 5,311 shifted to safer places.

According to the data provided by the SEOC, six districts have received above 100 per cent average rainfall as on Sunday.

Sabarkantha received the highest of 125 per cent followed by Banaskantha 108 per cent – both in North Gujarat. Mahisagar and Kheda in the central parts have recorded 107.2 per cent and 100.52 per cent, respectively, while Tapi district in the south has recorded 105.65 per cent and Saurashtra’s Bhavnagar 103.87 per cent.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for certain parts of Gujarat from September 3 to 6. Orange alert has been declared for Surat, Dang, Navsari and Tapi for September 3 and for districts of Narmada, Bharuch, Valsad, Amreli and Bhavnagar for September 4.

On September 5, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Surat, Dang, Navsari, Valsad, Tapi, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath, Narmada and Bharuch; in the districts of Rajkot, Junagadh, and Botad.

“Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely with isolated extremely heavy rainfall in the districts of Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath, Bharuch and Surat, Rajkot, Porbandar and Botad,” IMD alert for September 6 stated.

East Gujarat: 88.63 %

Kutch: 85.14 %

Saurashtra: 84.29%
