Gujarat: Jeweller, employee attacked while resisting robbery bid; 1 held

A jewellery shop owner and one his employees were injured after three men, who had entered their premises for robbery, attacked them with knives in Surat on Friday, police said. The accused later fled from the spot with only six silver rings, amounting to less than Rs 10,000.

One of the robbers was caught by the local residents and handed over to the police. The condition of the jewellery shop owner and his assistant is said to be stable, said police. According to officers, three masked men entered the Shantilal Jewellery Shop at Bhestan main road area.

At first, the trio asked shop owner Shantilal Shah to show them a few rings. However, after a few minutes, two of them fished out knives and threatened Shah along with assistant Banshilal Gurjar against raising an alarm, said officers. As the robbers began taking away some jewellery, Shah and Gurjar protested following which the accused attacked them on the neck, they added.

“Shah and Gurjar shouted for help and the trio escaped from the spot,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police, I division, N P Gohil.

As Shah and Gurjar continued shouting despite their injuries, locals gathered at the spot. A bike rider ran his vehicle into one of the accused, making him trip on the ground, said police, adding the local residents caught him and called up the police control room.

Bhestan police staff arrived at the spot and shifted the shop owner and his employee to Apple Hospital at Udhna Darwaja.

Following Shah’s complaint at Bhestan police station, police have registered a case under different sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) including Sections 309 (using deadly weapon or causing grievous hurt to any person), 311 (punishment for belonging to gang of robbers, dacoits, etc.), and 54 (abettor present when the offence is committed).

The accused arrested from the spot has been identified as Amir Ansari, a resident of Limbayat area. Talking to The Indian Express, ACP Gohil said, “We have caught one of the accused and are questioning him. We will try to dig out information from him on the whereabouts of the other two accused. Shah and Gurjar had suffered injuries on their throat and neck, and their condition is said to be stable.”
