Gujarat to receive heavy rainfall till August 24, IMD issues red alert for South Gujarat, Saurashtra districts

(Source: File)Owing to a number of systems being developed over the region, parts of Gujarat have been put under a red alert for heavy rains on August 19 and 20, and orange alert for remaining days till August 24.
On Sunday afternoon, nearly 170 talukas of the state received rainfall with Dhoraji in Rajkot getting the highest – 75 mm rainfall in the four-hour period between 2 pm to 6 pm – amount.
Till 6 pm, Maliya Hatina in Junagadh received 67 mm, Kamrej in Surat 48 mm, Junagadh city and taluka 45 mm each, Dhanera in Banaskantha 44 mm, Subir in Dang 44 mm, Talala in Gir Somnath 39 mm, Vyara in Tapi 38 mm, Pardi in Valsad 33 mm, Sidhpur in Patan 28 mm, Muli in Surendranagar 28 mm, Johanna in Mehsana 27 mm, Mangrol in Junagadh 27 mm and Modasa in Aravalli 27 mm rainfall.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), districts of Navsari, Valsad, Porbandar and Devbhoomi Dwarka have been issued a red alert for heavy to very heavy rains, which is very likely with isolated extremely heavy falls on August 19. For August 20, a red alert has been issued for districts of Navsari, Valsad, Amreli and Bhavnagar.
The various systems developed include the low-pressure area over Vidarbha with the associated upper air cyclonic circulation that is likely to weaken gradually and would reach over Gujarat around Monday morning as a remnant cyclonic circulation, the IMD stated.
“The upper air cyclonic circulation over Northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining south Gujarat and Konkan and Goa persists along with east-west trough that runs from upper-air cyclonic circulation associated with low-pressure area over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts to upper air cyclonic circulation over Northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining south Gujarat…” the IMD stated.
