To upgrade the standard of research and improve the quality of theses submitted by research students, the Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has taken an initiative to facilitate each of its research students to give at least an hour of presentation before the subject experts from countrys top institutions like IITs and NITs as also from abroad in presence of their own guides.
A total of 191 research students enrolled with GTU in 2011-12 academic year are currently giving presentations to the subject experts, followed by a discussion conducted by the experts on students research problems.
During discussions, students are being pointed out if they had any weaknesses in their research synopsis and advised how to improve it. Apart from 50 experts across India,15 others are from universities in the US,mostly Indian immigrants. Foreign experts are from the University of Washington,Iowa State University,University of Pennsylvania and South Alabama University. Foreign experts are here under a memorandum of agreement signed between GTU and foreign universities.
Asked for the reasons behind holding interaction of research students with experts,vice-chancellor Akshai Aggarwal said the new initiative was likely to create a proper research eco-system and improve the quality of research in the university.
Stating that the number of guides were much less that the requirement in most sought after disciplines like computer engineering, instrumentation and electronics and communication resulting over-burden on guides,he said the presentation before the experts from top institutes would improve the quality of their research. He said as the experts were not available locally, bringing them together from across the country would be of great help to the students as also universitys own research guides.
He said there had been occasions when theses of students were rejected at the time of their evaluation because of weaknesses in their research and that was very painful for the candidates. The new initiative,he said, would eliminate this possibility altogether as students would come to know about the weaknesses in the very beginning of their research.
He said presentation on research work would be held every year. However, students having completed one year of their research work would be allowed to participate in it. A total of 160 candidates had enrolled for PhDs in different subjects this year and their presentation would be held in 2014.
