Governor Acharya Devvrat (File Photo)Governor Acharya Devvrat launched celebrations for the 200th birth anniversary of Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, the founder of the Arya Samaj, at his birthplace Tankara in Morbi district on Saturday.
Devvrat, who is an Arya Samaji, announced the setting up of a ‘Gyanjyoti tirth’ at Tankara at a cost of Rs 250 crore, as a memorial. He also that a checkdam would be built on the Demi river that flows behind this tirth to ensure water is available throughout the year.
Addressing followers of the Arya Samaj who had gathered from across the world, Devvrat said: “Whatever I am today, there is a huge contribution of the Arya Samaj and the path shown by Dayanand Saraswati. This is the first time since Maharshi’s birth 200 years ago that such a major event is being organised in Tankara to celebrate the birth anniversary.”
Devvrat announced a donation of Rs 1 crore every year to spread his thoughts and teachings throughout the world.
A philosopher and reformer Dayanand was born on February 12, 1824.
President Droupadi Murmu will be a part of the celebrations on Monday.
