As several ministers fanned out to inspect rain-affected districts across southern and Saurashtra regions of Gujarat on Tuesday, the state continued to reel under the post-monsoon rainfall activity for the third day in a row.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned against very heavy rainfall due to a depression over east-central Arabian Sea, an upper air cyclonic circulation along with a trough, till October 31.

On Tuesday, the Gir Somnath was the worst affected. From 6 am till 6 pm, Talala in Gir Somnath recorded 43 mm (1.69 inch) followed by Veraval 42 mm and Sutrapada 42 mm. Ahmedabad district’s Bavla and Dholka received 42 mm and 40 mm, respectively.

In the past 24 hours ending Tuesday 5 pm, Rajula in Amreli taluka received the highest of 216 mm (8.5 inch), while Mahuva in Bhavnagar and Sutrapada in Gir Somnath received between 184 mm and 174 mm, respectively.
Gujarat has recorded the season’s 124.51 per cent rainfall so far – an increase from 118 per cent that was recorded till withdrawal of Southwest monsoon from the state on October 10. Kutch has recorded the highest of 148.41 per cent followed by South Gujarat 130.48 per cent, North Gujarat 123.48 per cent, East central Gujarat 123.2 per cent and Saurashtra 117.47 per cent.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert till October 31. Amreli and Bhavnagar are under an orange alert for October 29 while along with Amreli and Bhavnagar, districts of Junagadh, Gir Somnath and Porbandar are expected to receive very heavy rains on October 30. In addition, for October 31, Junagadh, Porbandar and Devbhoomi Dwarka have been put on orange alert.

Further, in view of the heavy rainfall forecast till October 31, the Minister of State for Disaster Management Sanjaysinh Mahida held a review meeting at the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC) in Gandhinagar.

Several senior officials, including District Collectors of Amreli, Porbandar, Junagadh, Gir-Somnath, Bhavnagar, Bharuch, Narmada, Navsari, Valsad, Dang and Tapi virtually joined the meeting. The Minister of State advised the administration of the potentially vulnerable districts to remain on alert in view of the forecast and reviewed the advance preparations made by the administration.
