GCCI writes to PMO after WR fails to allocate adequate rakes to transport salt

Gandhidham Chambers of Commerce and Industry has approached Prime Minister’s Office after Western Railways have allegedly failed to allocate rakes to salt industries.

Gandhidham Chambers of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has approached Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) after Western Railways have allegedly failed to allocate rakes to salt industries. Sources at GGCI said that this has resulted into huge accumulation of ready stocks at loading sites.

Nearly 65 per cent of the total requirement of salt in India is being supplied by Gandhidham. Meanwhile, railway authorities said this is a rabi crop season and the rakes are diverted to fertilizer industries to satisfy their demands. GCCI President Hiralal Parakh said: “Salt is important as per the Essential Commodities Act. For the last two years, most of the wagons are supplied to fertilizers and sugar industries. Our requirement is nearly 100 rakes,we are just given 50. Forty-three (eight wheels) wagons are equivalent to one rake. We have made number of requests, but it didn’t helped.”

He added,“GCCI has approached Government of India; Railways earn sizeable revenue to the tune of Rs 5 crore per day. Despite this, the Railways do not allocate rakes in adequate number to lift salt, resulting in huge loss to the industry.” According to Parakh, the non-allocation of funds is likely to render about 50,000 salt workers jobless,as there are over 400 indents pending under ‘D’ priority.

He added,“Salt industry in Gandhidham is one of the oldest industries in India. In fact,we have been supplying salt to West Bengal,Bihar,Assam,Uttar Pradesh,Assam,Orissa,Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.”

Meanwhile,U S Jha,Divisional Railway Manager (Commercial),Ahmedabad,Western Railways said: “This is rabi crop season, fertilizers are more in demand, therefore we need to supply wagons depending upon the demand. Railways had asked GCCI to fund them if they require more wagons. However, there was no dialogue from their side.”
