Funny Side Up

This is something my family has been wanting me to do for many years now. I was hesitant all this while because I knew I would have to answer such awkward questions.

After a successful run for over a decade in the industry, why did you change the way you spell your name?
This is something my family has been wanting me to do for many years now. I was hesitant all this while because I knew I would have to answer such awkward questions. But now it is over and done with once and for all. My family believed that dropping the ‘a’ would be better for me though my belief in such things is limited.

Your debut production venture,U,Me Aur Hum,was a love story and now you’re making a comedy. But you’re known for your intense characters. Why not stick to that?
As a producer, the film I take up is irrespective of the genre—if the script is good,I won’t bother about whether it is a comedy, love story or a political thriller. I really liked the script of All The Best and when I narrated it to the cast, they loved it too. After all, commercial success is important too. Personally speaking,I am trying out a multitude of things—for every All The Best,I am doing a Rajneeti also.

In Golmaal and its sequel and now in All The Best, you play a flirt. How comfortable are you with women in real life?
I am not as shy or introvert as the intense characters I play. I think I’m quite comfortable around women. But then it depends on the person too—whether we are on the same wavelength.

You propose to Bipasha Basu’s character mid-air in All The Best. How did you propose to Kajol?
I didn’t have to propose to her. We first started meeting up as friends and eventually starting dating. When we were in a relationship,we went ahead with the intention of marrying each other. It was unsaid but known by both of us. Even if I had to propose to her,it would have been a sober affair—real life is more honest.

You have been experimenting with your look in movies of late. Is this a personal initiative?
I always believe one has to look the part they play. Initially,I was not experimenting because back then all actors used to do many films simultaneously. But now, with one film a year, one can try out many looks.

You play an ambitious rock-star who is willing to sacrifice his friendship with Salman Khan’s character. What does friendship mean to you in real life?
It means a lot since friends are one’s support system. I don’t make a lot of friends since I believe in quality and not in quantity. Sanjay Dutt,Abhishek Bachchan and Suneil Shetty have been my friends for years now.

You are seen whipping yourself in London Dreams. Is that for real?
Not really, not as hard for sure. But the little whipping that I did hurt quite bad.

Your camaraderie with Salman Khan in the movie is making news.
We share a great rapport since Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam days. He is a great guy to work with and our chemistry on-screen is worth being written about.
