Four farm labourers drowned in a lake on Thursday while taking an idol of Lord Ganesha for immersion in Napad village of Anand district. According to the Anand taluka police,the incident occurred after the victims failed to judge the depth of the lake. The four carried a five-feet tall idol into the Dudhiya Lake thinking the bank of the lake was not deep. We found their bodies 20 feet inside the lake along with the idol. The villagers told us that none of the deceased knew how to swim, Sub-Inspector V P Dabhi said. They were declared dead on arrival at the Anand Civil Hospital,the police said. The deceased have been identified as Chetan Makwana (22),Nagin Makwana (28),Vinod Makwana (33) and Praful Makwana (26). All four worked as farm hands in Napad village.
